What are the applications of belt filter presses in the environmental protection field?

Belt filter presses, as highly efficient, continuously operated solid–liquid separation devices, play a vital role in the environmental protection sector. They operate by filtering suspensions through a filter cloth, thereby separating solid particles from the liquid phase. This equipment boasts large processing capacity, a high degree of automation, and low operating costs, making it widely used in wastewater treatment, sludge dewatering, and industrial solid-waste management.

Belt filter presses, as highly efficient, continuously operated solid–liquid separation devices, play a crucial role in the environmental protection sector. They operate by filtering suspensions through a filter cloth, thereby separating solid particles from the liquid phase. This equipment boasts large processing capacity, a high degree of automation, and low operating costs, making it widely used in wastewater treatment, sludge dewatering, and industrial solid-waste management.

    I. Applications of Belt Filters in Wastewater Treatment

In the field of wastewater treatment, belt filter presses are primarily used for sludge dewatering. The sludge generated during wastewater treatment has a high water content and must be dewatered before it can be subjected to subsequent disposal. By employing two stages—gravity dewatering and mechanical pressing—a belt filter press can reduce the sludge’s water content from over 95% to between 60% and 80%.

Take a municipal wastewater treatment plant as an example: the plant employs belt filter presses for sludge dewatering, with a processing capacity of 50 tonnes per day. Following dewatering, the sludge volume is reduced by 60%, significantly lowering transportation and disposal costs. Meanwhile, the filtrate, after appropriate treatment, can be reused, thereby achieving closed-loop water resource management.

Belt filter presses also play a crucial role in industrial wastewater treatment. For instance, in the treatment of electroplating wastewater, these units can effectively remove heavy metal ions and suspended solids, ensuring that the treated effluent meets discharge standards. One electroplating plant, for example, employs a belt filter press to treat its wastewater, achieving a heavy metal removal rate of over 95% and reducing annual heavy metal emissions by approximately 2 tonnes.

II. Applications of Belt Filters in Solid Waste Treatment

In industrial solid-waste treatment, belt filter presses are primarily used for the treatment of solids-containing wastewater. Solids-containing wastewater generated during industrial production—such as mineral slurries and coal sludges—must be treated through solid–liquid separation. Belt filter presses can continuously and efficiently separate solid particles, enabling the recovery of valuable solid materials.

A mining enterprise employs belt filter presses to treat tailings slurry, recovering approximately 100,000 tonnes of iron concentrate annually and generating economic benefits of RMB 20 million. At the same time, this process reduces tailings discharge and mitigates environmental pollution. In coal slurry treatment, belt filter presses can reduce the moisture content from 80% to 30%, facilitating subsequent transportation and utilization.

Belt filter presses also play a crucial role in hazardous waste treatment. For instance, when handling hazardous waste containing heavy metals, these machines can effectively separate heavy-metal precipitates, thereby reducing the volume of hazardous waste and lowering treatment costs. One hazardous-waste treatment company, for example, uses belt filter presses to treat chromium-containing waste, resulting in an annual reduction of approximately 500 metric tons in the volume of hazardous waste requiring treatment.

III. Application of Belt Filters in Flue Gas Desulfurization

In the field of flue-gas desulfurization, belt filter presses are primarily used for gypsum dewatering. The gypsum slurry produced in the limestone–gypsum wet desulfurization process must undergo dewatering before it can be recovered and reused. Belt filter presses can reduce the moisture content of the gypsum slurry to below 10%, thereby meeting the requirements for gypsum recovery and reuse.

A certain power plant employs belt filter presses for gypsum dewatering, recovering approximately 100,000 tonnes of gypsum annually and generating economic benefits of RMB 5 million. The recovered gypsum can be used in cement production, construction materials, and other applications, thereby achieving resource recycling. At the same time, the use of belt filter presses has reduced the discharge of desulfurization wastewater, thus lowering pollution of the aquatic environment.

In desulfurization wastewater treatment, belt filter presses can effectively remove suspended solids and heavy metal ions from the effluent. One power plant has implemented a belt filter press for treating desulfurization wastewater, achieving a suspended-solids removal rate of over 95% and a heavy-metal removal rate of over 90%, with the treated water meeting discharge standards.

Belt filter presses hold vast potential for application in the environmental protection sector. As environmental regulations continue to tighten, these machines will find increasing use across a broader range of industries. Looking ahead, belt filter presses are expected to evolve toward larger scale and greater intelligence, with enhanced processing capacity and progressively higher levels of automation. Meanwhile, the development of novel filter cloth materials will boost filtration efficiency and extend service life. In terms of energy conservation and emission reduction, the energy consumption of belt filter presses will be further reduced, thereby making a more substantial contribution to the achievement of green and environmentally friendly objectives.
